Coleman LED Quad Lantern Reviews

Review by Wildness:

I have been a long time believer in only using propane lanterns when car camping. Previous battery operated lanterns with florescent bulbs that I have tried have always lacked for sufficient light to eat by let alone cook or setup a tent with.

But, then I discovered the Coleman LED Quad Lantern and everything has changed. This is, by far, the best camping lantern I have ever used! Not only is it super bright, it is smaller and more convenient than a propane lantern – especially since I no longer need to tote around gas canisters.

But, this lantern is more than just a lantern; it provides for personal lighting needs as well. Each of the lantern’s four light panels detach and work as rechargeable hand lamps for that rummage in the back of the truck for gear or the scramble to the bathroom sight in the middle of the night. And, with a 1-1/2 hour charge time, that makes these light panels useful for reading in the tent, etc.

It is not only this lantern’s overall design that make it great, but the attention to little things as well. For example, the rechargeable light panels are powered by standard AA rechargeable batteries. Unlike other rechargeable light systems where the battery is sealed and inaccessible, if a battery eventually fails, it can be easily replaced with a standard, off the shelf rechargeable battery.

No more propane, no more broken mantles, no more trying to light a propane lantern in the dark. The Coleman LED Quad Lantern is the lantern of the future that I bet all competitors will try to copy.

Review by D. J. Bell:

Brightness:

When all four panels are attached to the base, the lantern puts out a great deal of light. It will illuminate a campsite with ease. The individual panels when detached put out an adequate amount of light. Great for a trek to the restroom or the back of the truck to fetch some gear.

Portability:

The 8D batteries in the base make the lantern a little heavy. But each panel when removed is extremely light, as they only contain a small rechargeable battery. There are plenty of handles at the top for easy toting.

Battery/power:

I’ve used my lantern several times and have been very pleased with the runtime of the battery. In addition, it seems to take a long time away from the base before the panels go dim.

Summary:

The lantern is expensive compared to other battery lanterns, but it is well worth the money. My family loves it!

We’ve used this several times since buying a couple of years ago. The amount of light it gives off is incredible, and it lasts pretty much as long as they say it will. It’s not light though – the battery is fairly sizable and I think it may be lead-acid – not sure.

Coleman Two-Mantle Propane Lantern with Case Reviews

Review by Kent Vaughn:

Used this for the first time this past weekend, so I’ve only had limited experience so far. (I’ll update this review if I run into a problem later.) Some brief highlights:

* The lantern works quite well. It puts out a good deal of light and is well constructed.

*Like other reviewers, I am concerned about the possibility of cross threading the soft aluminum header in the lantern versus the propane tanks. When attached the propane, take your time and be careful not to over tighten.

* I think it is well worth the money to buy the version with the hard case. It is a nice case, easy to put the lantern away and makes is great to pack.

* Like any propane product, there is some propane “hiss” while it burns, but I didn’t find it bothersome. Possibly I expected some, so wasn’t surprised.

* This lantern does NOT have a ignition built in,so you have to use a match or a small torch, but it was easy enough to light.

Overall, a good lantern. We’ll see how it holds up with time. The only reason for the 4stars instead of 5 is the issue with the soft aluminum threads.

Review by bblhed:

Picked this one up after that last camping trip where I found I had plenty of propane but all my lanterns run on batteries that were all dead. Decided that this was what I need to solve that problem, but the store didn’t have the auto ignite model in stock. Plenty bright and easy to use, but I worry that I might break a mantle lighting with matches. The only reason for the four stars is because in my opinion you should opt for the same lantern with auto ignite. Don’t get me wrong, this is still a great lamp.

Coleman LED Rechargeable Lantern Reviews

Review by N. Wereley:

I purchased this lantern and I waited until I actually used it for the purpose of emergency lighting before submitting a review. I just survived the Blizzard of 2010 in Washington DC with no electricity for three days. This lantern was charged up and ready to go before the storm, and was able to get us through the three days of power outage with about 3 -5 hours per night of judicious use. This lantern works best if hung above eye level as the LED light is probably too bright for most people. However, this lantern gives off sufficient light for reading at night with no eye strain. This is a huge plus when the only entertainment during a blizzard with no electricity is a good book! I used night light, lo and hi settings, and I found that there was significant changes in illumination from setting to setting. The power cable and car charging unit can be stored inside of the lantern base. I leave mine plugged into the wall outlet for on-demand lighting when needed. I particularly like the car charger capability, although I have not yet had occasion to use it. Overall, great product for the intended use of emergency lighting in the home or light for the campsite.

Rayovac SE3DLN Sportsman Extreme 300-Lumen 3D-Battery LED Lantern Reviews

Review by SkinDiver:

Just received this product so I will defer commenting on battery life until later. Overall I have been very pleased and surprised with this product. First off, this lantern is fairly compact…I was under the impression that this would be larger from the pictures but once I opened it up, I was pleasingly surprised. The unit is very compact and feels very sturdy. There is rubber on the base and around the lower portion of the lantern, the switch is very easy to operate and has 3-modes (High, Low, and Strobe). The entire top/globe can be unscrewed and hung upside down (clip in the base) to use as a room or tent light in “bare bulb” mode. Overall I have been very impressed with the output of this lantern as well. This is a very bright lantern for it’s compact size; outshining normal 4D fluorescent U-tubed lanterns and a coleman pack-away LED lantern. The diffuser is also very pleasing with no rings, lines, or shadows to speak of. In bare bulb mode, the light is almost too bright for your eyes but works well if it’s hung high overhead (so you’re not looking directly at the unit). Low mode is also very useful and brighter than your typical “nightlight” levels in other LED lanterns “low” modes. Overall I am very impressed with this product and plan to purchase more of these units for use while night fishing, camping, and to use during power failures.

Update (10/31/09): Just an update, I recently used this light in a power outage and it performed great. Bright and the batteries are still going strong. I also purchased 2 additional units and with just 3-D batteries each, who can complain! This is a great compact lantern.

Review by R. Scholer:

Let me start off by saying that this is overall a VERY good product, but receives 3 stars for a design flaw.

The green LED is ALWAYS blinking, even with the main switch “off”. This constant parasitic drain on the batteries ruins my intended use of a long-term storage emergency light for the house.

I did call Rayovac on this issue and they said that it will drain the batteries in 32 days. This cannot be accurate and I know that this small load will take MUCH longer than 32 days to drain the batteries. Still, for my purpose I now must remove the batteries and fumble in the dark to put them in during a power failure.

The difficult battery cover (mentioned by many in the reviews) does not help this issue!

Yet another product that is ALMOST great. I would have bought many more of these for family members to use as emergency lights, but now have to find a better option where the batteries will still be full after long term storage.

Hope this helps!

Review by Nats:

I like this little LED lantern. You can adjust the amount of light you need. Even on the highest setting, it does not seem very bright, but if you are in total darkness, like a power outage, it is perfectly fine for

doing what you need to do. Yes, it could stand to be a little brighter.

The biggest problem I have with it is, the glass is clear, and there is nothing to filter the glare of the LED and reflector. It’s very annoying. I solved the problem by cutting a 4 1/2 X 10” strip of white tissue paper and wrapping it around the glass. Not only did this fix the glare, the tissue paper also acts as a “diffuser” and spreads the light evenly, and softly in every direction without effecting the overal brightness. It just made it softer, and more pleasant. The lamp does not get hot, so no worries. I have had the light on high all night, no problems.

So, with the tissue paper diffuser I give it a 4 star rating, without the diffuser, I would give it 2 stars, simply because the glare is so annoying.

Review by W. Crawford:

I just got this lantern. I’m testing it out using hi capacity NiMH rechargeables. Works very nicely. I’ve got 13 hours so far on high, and still going strong. I returned a 4D collapseable version. Biggest drawback on the 4D pack-away, besides its lower light output with its convoluted reflector system was that it flickered sometimes due to the sliding contacts inside used to turn it off automatically when collapsed. This model of course does not exhibit that problem.

Build quality of this model is pretty good. Battery holder is a little flimsy. Light output is nothing to really gripe about. It’s good, but of course more is always better. Somewhere around 10 hours on high, and 20+ on low would still be acceptable and Low would then be as bright as this current model is on high. That would pretty much maximize this lantern using 8 D-cells, and would make it superior in light output and efficiency to any older flourescent models, and pretty much obsolete them altogether.

Coleman has just offered another new model above this one with 4 removeable panels that will run on their own. It has 24 conventional type LEDs, and looks solidly built out of a thermoplastic though not too water resitant looking design (could be wrong on that upon a closer inspection). It’s selling now at Bass Pro Shop for , but I don’t like the aesthetics of it. It’s not very nice looking like a classic lantern.

I’d like to see this model beefed up just a little more on the output with a little more robust battery holder and an improved ring around the base for slippage and or more protection.

If Coleman wants to support “green” initiatives as an outdoors company, then for those of us who will use NiMHs, or the newest generation low self-leakage NiMHs, the battery holder and springs could be more robust for more frequent battery changes. (Coleman’s rechargeable version of this lantern should be good for most not wanting separates, but the self contained model has lower light output, and lasts less time on a charge than going hi-cap D-cells in this one. Plus, when the cells go bad, I won’t have to buy a new lantern, or pay as much as a new one for a custom replacement battery and/or service.) The plastic on this one’s battery holder is fairly thin, and the springs are very thin. Feels delicate enough that one should use caution changing batteries, or it might crack and bend springs. It’s a bit flimsy for my tastes with flexing so be careful.

I’d really like to see some rubber around the base or an integrated bead around the edge of the lip. The thin liped, hard plastic edge on the bottom seems like it might wind up getting some chunks broken out of it for some harder users, or from sitting it on the ground in rocky terrain rather than just picnic tables.

It appears that this lantern wins the beauty contest for sure, but that Coleman’s new panelized lantern would probably win a durability test.

Review by Michael B. Wright:

This is by far, the most useful lantern I own…. The natural colored light is AWESOME.

1.) It’s small, and easy to put in the backpack

2.) On low, (which is not much different from high) it runs a LONG time.

3.) It takes my rechargeable batteries easily (some lanterns are a bit too small such as my xb glorb).

4.) The light is NOT obnoxious, it has a tint that is just as good as an incandescent.

5.) The light output is appropriate for it’s size (NO, It’s not a gas lantern, but as far as LED’s go, it’s fantastic).

I have purchased two from this vendor and will purchase a couple more.

If you currently own old school LED’s and hate the blueish light output, you won’t regret purchasing this… It looks so close to normal light!

I just had a power outage due to some damage to lines, I was comfortable, able to navigate around my house, and suffered NO eyestrain. Two units were enough to give me ample light to take a bath, read, play cards, fix a sandwich and find batteries for my A.M. radio.

1/4/10 little lights are still going great, I love the color of the natural light. P.S. Eneloops will not last as long as long as 2650 mah batteries if you are using rechargeables.

Review by RumRunner:

This LED Lantern was just what I was looking for.

LED, thus a long battery life with low draw and low heat output compared to traditional bulbs.

Small Light Weight Package, that I hang from the Zipper on my Bimini top on my boat.

Bright 360 degree output for it’s size, I run it on the low setting, but I wish there was an even lower level as option.

We hang this light from the Bimini Top on my 25′ Boat and it easily provides a nice glow of light on the whole Open Cockpit. Much nicer than having to use a flashlight to make cocktails and find things. This latern just lights up the whole are.

My friend, just borrowed mine last week and he already ordered one for his Boat as well!!!

My only negative would be that the price seams high at first, but I don’t regret paying it.

Review by K. Miller:

Truth in advertising. They are good candles that fit the candle lanterns. Mine seem to last closer to 10-11hrs but I’m not burning them straight through or keeping an exact watch on them.

Clean burning, easy to clean up and they travel and store well. Good buy.

Review by Karen Grail:

These candles are the best I have found and work wonderfully in the UCO candle lanterns. They are an easy burn and last quite awhile. They are so good you really don’t need to trim them much if you use them multiple times (rather than one long burn). They also burn very evenly which is a must!

They are shipped directly from UCO and and are well made. Can’t say one bad thing about them.
