MSR Alpine Folding Utensils – Set Reviews

I am happy with my purchase of these camping utensils. They do what they are supposed to do, plain and simple. They seem durable. The one complaint that I have is that the middle utensil in the picture (I think it is for flipping pancakes) doesn’t have a locking hinge, so I am concerned that the plastic will fatigue over time. I don’t have proof of this since I’ve only used these once, but it is a minor concern of mine; not enough to bring it to four stars, though. You can tell a lot of thought went into the dimensions of these utensils. For one, they do collapse down into a more managable size. Secondly, the spatula is narrow enough to be lowered into a tin can to stir soup. I thought that was great. Anyway, good set of utensils, to be sure.

I just started some longer hiking/camping expeditions this past summer. I sat down with my pack and equipment to decide what went and what stayed. As a chef, I hated to omit the slightly more gourmet items in my bag but my cooking utensils were too long and awkwardly shaped to be convenient. The MSR utensil set nicely solved that issue. I love these things! They are VERY compact and weigh almost nothing. The locking mechanism works perfectly. The straining utensil does not lock unfortunately but I have not found this to be a problem. Also I would be curious to know how much abuse the thin material at the bend can take before it breaks but so far it hasn’t. The ladle also has measuring lines inside which have come in handy!

I bought this to use with addition to my aluminum mess kit made by Coleman. It Is very compact and effective. at times it can be hard to clean but at home you can just pop it in the dish washer. The knife is a little hard to get out but is great to have(I no longer have to use my knife). I also think they way that they separate is really nice. As a bonus they fit into the mess kit’s pot that I mentioned above. All in all it was a good kit that I will faithfully carry in the woods.

Great price on the flatware set. It served our family well. The spoons are huge, which is good for adults, but if you have small children I recommend bringing there own spoons. This is CAMPING flatware…great for CAMPING and picnics. I shook the pouch and nothing fell out. However, the set comes in a thick plastic envelope with snaps. Keep the pouch in there for transport to avoid losing any pieces. The gaps that another critic complained about were absent from my sets (bought 2). The pieces are lightweight, so you can bring them backpacking, too. Mine are going into the picnic basket. I suppose I am a little disappointed that I will not be able to use this set when I break out the Lennox for Thanksgiving.

I took these on a 5 day camping trip, to use with my stainless steel cook set. All of the pieces show wear, the nylon is peeling off on the edges. I didn’t leave them in the pans on the stove, nor did I cook anything that stuck to the pan. I am really disappointed in how cheap these were made. Buy a quality utensil set and a key ring to keep them together, but don’t buy these.

After opening the package and handling the utensils, I noticed that my hands were red.

I had to scrub the 3-piece set several times before the red ink stoped comming off, because of the concern with lead in the ink comming from China, I decided to throw the set away.

I’ve been very pleased with my jetboil utensils and don’t consider them to be flimsy at all. I love the telescoping design so that I have the benefits of compact/lightweight while still getting to use a nice long-handled, full-size spoon and fork (nice for eating out of bottle, jetboil stove, or freezer bags…lol). They wash up easily and durability has been excellent. Check online reviews- they may seem flimsy at first glance to campers using cast iron stoves and fire cooking, but backpackers give these 4 and 5 stars. Well designed, hold up great on trips in the pack, good size and nice reach.

We used these on our camping trip. The pros were that they stack together nicely and the sizes of the pans are perfect for what we needed. But after one use the non stick finish came off even with using nylon utensils. They were used once and they look old and I couldn’t even get that clean using a scrubby pad.
