I purchased this rod/reel combo for the convenience of having an outfit that would fit inside my checked baggage when I travel on airlines. The initial performance was good; I used it to catch a dozen or so rainbow trout while fishing in the Donner Lake region of California. The padded bag survived the trip quite well, and storage is more than adequate. The only flaw I encountered was some loosening of the rod sections after several casts. If you don’t pause to push everything in tightly periodically, the rod tip (or even the whole rod) will separate and get flung into the lake with your lure.

The 310XE had features I liked. Immediate lock up, no flip back of handle with a strike. However, Thumb-finger grip on handle had lots of play with no visible way of tightening. Shaft through reel (that handle attached to) had a lot of play/looseness. Hence handle had a lot of play and wobble. Bail was extremely stiff and hard to start retrieve–had to grip crank and twist. I put on 4 lb test monofiliment, which is what it is rated for. It didn’t seem to me that it wound evenly. Had to watch back lash and birds nests (this may have been because I was just not used to the feel). After one day of fishing, I returned the reel.

I found this to be a nice rugged real that has held up well over time. The drag is very smooth and the bail has a nice strong spring. It is good for lightweight action when you are just looking for a little fun and want to travel light.

Generally a reel under is not worth your effort and a reel over is out of my price range. I have not been disappointed. The reel functions well and is very smooth all around with a 5 bearing system. Ah, the timeless and enduring Zebco 202, the ownership of which is as essential a rite of passage for American youth as sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Nearly 40 years ago, at the tender age of seven, the mighty 202 was my first fishing reel and worked like a dream in terms of use and maintenance for a kid for whom mechanical aptitude and patience were in very short supply. Its simple push-button casting is easy for kids to master and it’s robust enough for them to haul in small panfish, perch, catfish, and bass hand over fist. Setting the drag and changing line is also a breeze. Believe it or not, I still have mine and it works perfectly, which bodes well for my son who is just now showing an interest in angling. I have used these reels for 2+ years fishing multiple reel sizes/multiple poles. This is a really great reel. I would give it an A+ only because I haven’t spent more money than on other reels. Basically its you spend -90 (which I would say this reel is worth it) or you take the next step and spend 0-0..?? 49.5 inch muskie,30 lbs – braided powerpro line 8lb/20lbmono on a spinner w/worm caught on this line. These reels are nice for those that want a good real but don’t want to pay the big bucks for the extra stuff that only the true pros can enjoy about a reel. The discs are large enough to take a strong run yet still smooth under load. The handel is crank mounted so there no added play to worry about. It’s also quite easy to switch RL. It’s a long stroke for more line with a smoother cast.

I have been useing their 6730 (small) for quite a while for every kind of fish I can catch in my part of the world. The most impressive was a 6.65 lb large mouth I hooked on 4lb test in less then 4 feet of water near some fell trees. As soon as I felt the pull I knew I had a nice one. This was a true real world test of the drag and line feed. It took me nearly ten minutes to get it In while chaseing it in the jhon boat. It took some vary strong and sudden runs (you know what I’m talking about), but the real handeled nicely and was smooth the whole time. I was actually crappy fishing and got a nice bass by mistake. Ultralight gear all around and was not setup to catch this fish but did thanks to this reels smooth and simple operation.

The larger 6735 I have has yet to let me down bass, cat or carp fishing. Catching fish well over the 5, 8 and 12 pound mark off the same real.
